The company calls itself the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest and is known for Unfiltered Wheat Beer, the Smokestack Series and Tank 7 American Saison. Boulevard has been part of Duvel Moortgat since 2014.

How Boulevard started in Kansas City

In the mid-1980s, founder John McDonald discovered the history and variety of flavor in European brewing tradition while on holiday in France. He was a carpenter with a workshop on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City and started with a small homebrew setup. With that he built a reputation as a maker of special, tasty beer.

In his own words: big beers, lots of variety, beers with color, flavor, aroma and body, for real beer lovers. That went against the grain, because in the Midwest and the rest of the US the choice back then was a lot narrower than it is now.

In 1988 McDonald began building the brewery in a brick building from around the turn of the previous century on Southwest Boulevard. It got a vintage Bavarian brewing system, and the first batches followed in the fall of 1989. On 17 November 1989 the first keg of Boulevard Pale Ale went, in the back of McDonald's pickup truck, to Ponak's Mexican Restaurant nearby.

Unfiltered Wheat, Smokestack and Tank 7

The first 35-barrel brewing system produced Pale Ale, Unfiltered Wheat and a handful of seasonal beers. In 1994 McDonald released an unfiltered version of Wheat Beer, first on draft. Unfiltered Wheat Beer became the brewery's flagship.

In 2005 the first major expansion began. A year later Boulevard brewed on Brewhouse 2, a 150-barrel brewhouse. With that extra capacity the Smokestack Series started, with bolder styles such as The Sixth Glass, Dark Truth Stout and Tank 7 American Saison. Tank 7 quickly won national recognition.

In 2014 Boulevard joined the Duvel Moortgat family of brewers. Cellar Five followed, which nearly doubled the fermentation capacity. The barrel-aging program moved to a warehouse with more than 5,000 bourbon, whiskey and other spirit barrels, and many barrel-aged beers have been available all year round since then. In 2019 came Space Camper Cosmic IPA, the start of a whole series of IPAs.

Boulevard at Hoptimaal

At Hoptimaal it's all about Boulevard Tank 7, an 8.5% American Saison in 33 cl.
