The brewery is older than Belgium itself and was run by seven generations of the Bosteels family. It kept brewing through both world wars, and three generations of Bosteels were mayor of the municipality.

The brewery stands in the middle of the village, with a whitewashed brewing tower and the former family villa, a protected monument designed by architect Minnaert. The family lived there until 2004. In 2016 the brewery was taken over by AB InBev. Antoine Bosteels stayed on as chairman of the board of directors and the brewery remains in Buggenhout. You can visit it on Friday afternoons and at the weekend, with a tour and a tasting of two beers.

Strong Belgian beers with a long line

In the 1980s Ivo Bosteels, son of Antoine, brought Pauwel Kwak back to the market. That put strong Belgian beers at the centre. In 1990 his son Antoine, the seventh generation, saw the opportunities for strong blond beers. Under his leadership Tripel Karmeliet and DeuS Brut des Flandres were created.

Tripel Karmeliet is a golden-blond tripel of 8.4% brewed with three grains: wheat, oats and barley. The recipe is derived from a recipe from 1679 of the old Carmelite monastery in Dendermonde. The beer is bottled unfiltered and is bottle conditioned. In the Best Belgian-Style Tripel category it won gold at the World Beer Cup in 1998 and silver in 2002. You taste the lightness and freshness of wheat, the creaminess of oats and a spicy, lemony dryness.

Bosteels at Hoptimaal

At Hoptimaal you'll find Bosteels in 33 cl, in the styles tripel, blond and pale ale, with strengths from 7.4 to 8.4%.
