The brewery is a stone's throw from the Egmond coast and is linked to the Sint-Adelbertabdij. The name refers to Adalbert, who according to the brewery came to the region from Ireland around 690 to convert the Frisians to Christianity. He settled in a spot in the dunes that came to be called Egmond.

Brouwerij Egmond started out as a gypsy brewer. The first batch of Sancti Adalberti was brewed at Brouwerij de Prael in Amsterdam, because there was no brewing installation in Egmond yet. Later, the plans for a brewery of their own at the abbey were developed further.

The brewery works under an official licence from a Benedictine abbey and says it is the only one in the Netherlands to do so. Part of the proceeds goes to the upkeep of the abbey.
