They are known for hazy IPAs and double IPAs, brewed on a small system with local ingredients and labels by artists. At Hoptimaal you had a triple IPA from them, which is out of stock right now.

From Switchback to the Burlington waterfront

Foam Brewers started as an idea from five people who didn't yet know how it would all come together. One of them is brewer Todd Haire, who previously worked at Magic Hat and Switchback Brewing in Vermont. According to The Craft Beer Channel, some people from Switchback's production team wanted to brew more inventively.

In 2016 Foam opened in Burlington, on the shore of Lake Champlain, at 112 Lake Street. A year later, RateBeer named the brewery one of the ten best new breweries in the world. In 2016 Haire also founded House of Fermentology, together with writer and homebrewer Bill Mares, about a mile further on.

Local, hazy and with art on the can

Foam is known for hazy IPAs, but brews more widely: double IPAs, IPAs, pale ales and beers with mixed cultures from a 10-barrel oak foeder. In 2019 Haire said they had brewed about 650 times in three years, good for 275 different beers. That happens on a direct-fired 7-barrel system, built in Colorado.

Local is the common thread. Haire sums it up like this: 'Have quality inputs. Make them local. Then drink your local. And drink it fresh.' In a wet-hop ale from 2016, he used malt from Peterson Quality Malt in nearby Monkton.

Art is part of it too. The labels are by changing artists, and the annual Foam Canvas Contest gives the winner a year of Canvas cans, plus $2,000. Together with House of Fermentology, Foam is also working on Natural Hack, a programme for low intervention wine, cider and mead.

Foam Brewers at Hoptimaal

We had one beer from Foam: Foam Triple IPA - Some Things Last A Long Time, a 10% IPA in a 47.3 cl package.
