Hacker-Pschorr

Hacker-Pschorr is a Munich brewery that came into being in 1972 through the merger of Hacker and Pschorr, with roots going back to 1417. It is one of the six breweries within the Munich city limits that serve at the Oktoberfest. The brand is known for its Oktoberfestbier and classic Bavarian styles such as weissbier and helles.

From Hacker to Hacker-Pschorr in Munich

The name Hacker first appears in a document from 1417, as 'Preustatt an der Hagkagasse': a brewing site in the Hagkagasse in Munich. That is almost a century before the Reinheitsgebot of 1516. The brewing site stood on the spot of today's Altes Hackerhaus at Sendlingerstrasse 14, halfway between the old town hall at the Marienplatz and the city gate Sendlinger Tor. In 1738 a brewer named Simon Hacker bought the property and renamed it 'Hacker Bräu'.

In 1797 Josef Pschorr, owner of another brewery, gained control of Hacker Bräu through his marriage to Therese Hacker. The two breweries then remained independent until they merged in 1972 to form Hacker-Pschorr. Three years later the double name appeared on the labels for the first time. The brewery itself closed in 1998. Since then Hacker-Pschorr has been a brand without its own brewery: Paulaner brews all the beers, and according to Wikipedia the Paulaner Brauerei Gruppe is the owner.

Classic Bavarian beers and the Oktoberfest

Hacker-Pschorr makes classic Bavarian beers. According to The Oxford Companion to Beer, there are more than twelve beers on the market with the Hacker-Pschorr label: among them a helles, a dunkel, a pils, four weissbiers, an Oktoberfest-märzen and an unfiltered, yeasty doppelbock. That the name can be found at the Oktoberfest is no coincidence: Hacker-Pschorr is one of the six breweries within the Munich city limits, and only those breweries are invited to serve there.

The brand is also firmly rooted in the city. On its own website Hacker-Pschorr has described itself for years as a partner of football club TSV 1860 München, including at matches in the Grünwalder Stadion, and of ice hockey club EHC Red Bull München.

Hacker-Pschorr at Hoptimaal

With us you'll find Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfestbier / Superior Festbier.
