You know them for hoppy pale ales and IPAs, traditional London porters and stouts, and for Table Beer, a 3% pale ale they brew every week.

From Druid Street to the Spa Terminus railway arches

Evin O'Riordain founded The Kernel Brewery in 2009 in Bermondsey, London. It was one of the city's first craft brewers. Within ten years, the brewery had helped get around a hundred new microbreweries in the capital off the ground.

The first brewing system of 6.5 hectolitres stood on Druid Street. In 2012 it was replaced by a 32 hectolitre system on Dockley Road, in the railway arches of Spa Terminus. At Kernel, quality comes before quantity. Around 90% of the beer is sold in London, and according to O'Riordain, demand is far higher than what they can brew. The brewery is independent.

A broad range with a London twist

Kernel doesn't experiment for the sake of experimenting. Every brew is a deliberate evolution of the previous batch, and the hops used change with the availability and characteristics of that year's harvest. So the recipe of a beer is never completely fixed.

The styles range from American-inspired pale ales and IPAs to sours and traditional London porters and stouts. They also brew mixed fermentation beers and beers on foeder, such as a Flemish-style Oud Bruin. Part of their work looks back in time: the Export India Porter is reconstructed from nineteenth-century London brewing archives, and the East India Pale Ale is based on London 1897. Table Beer, first brewed in 2012, is a 3% pale ale influenced by the British tradition of cask conditioned beer.

The Kernel Brewery at Hoptimaal

With us you'll find The Kernel Brewery in 33 cl.
