A family brewery from northern France
According to its own website, Brasserie Goudale was founded in 1919 in Douai. The brewery calls itself French, family-run and independent. It is now based in Arques, in Hauts-de-France. André Pecqueur is the CEO (pdg). According to a visit report, he oversees three brewing sites in the region.
The name comes from 'good ale', the term for local ales in the 14th century. You can also visit the brewery: the tour ends with a tasting of the beers.
From bière de garde to IPA
The flagship is La Goudale, a blonde bière de garde of 7.2%. The beer is top-fermented and brewed with three Flemish hop varieties, two malts (pale and caramel), wheat and rice. Coriander and bitter orange peel add the spiciness.
Around it, the brewery built a wide range: La Goudale Ambrée, La Goudale IPA (7.2%) and G de Goudale (7.9%), including a Grand Cru. Triple Secret des Moines, Belzebuth, Kingwood, Raoul and La Bière du Démon also come from Goudale.
The trophy cabinet is full. In 2008, La Goudale was named best bière de garde in the world at the World Beer Awards. At the World Beer Challenge 2014, both La Goudale and G de Goudale Grand Cru won gold.
