Two brothers from Milo start out in Portland
Bissell Brothers began in November 2011 as an idea of brothers Noah and Peter Bissell. Noah was fascinated by homebrewing, while Peter had an interest in, and growing experience with, business and marketing. They grew up in Milo, a small village in the middle of Maine, and had no experience with commercial brewing. They saw a gap in the market, both in beer styles and in the way beer is sold, and spent two years on a crash course to make it happen.
On 7 December 2013, the brewery sold its first kegs of The Substance Ale at The Thirsty Pig, where both brothers had worked. Cans followed in February 2014, and in April 2014 the first taproom opened at One Industrial Way. On 4 June 2016 they opened a new brewery and taproom in a 100-year-old building where railcars used to be repaired, on a former Maine Central Railroad site. They are still there today, at Thompson's Point.
A flagship IPA and Maine as the starting point
The Substance Ale is the brewery's flagship, an IPA that is available daily in Portland. Noah also developed beers such as Baby Genius, Swish, Lux and Reciprocal.
According to the brewery itself, Maine always comes first, even now that the beers are sold regionally, nationally and internationally. The starting point was to make flavours that people in Maine did not yet know, and to serve them as fresh as possible. In the autumn of 2016, Josh Schlesinger, one of the first employees, started the boutique distributor Sleek Machine as part of the group. Bissell Brothers calls itself a family-first company, with a taproom, a kitchen and a garden alongside the brewery.
Bissell Brothers at Hoptimaal
We stock two beers from Bissell Brothers: a stout and a barleywine, both in 50 cl. The strength ranges from 12.9 to 14.3%. On Untappd, Resurrection (Bourbon & Rye Barrel) and Mirroring Dimensions (Batch #02) are the highest rated.
These are not beers to knock back quickly. Don't serve them ice cold: at around 10 to 14 °C, the flavour of heavy stouts and barleywines comes across best. A 50 cl bottle is easily shared between two, in small glasses.
