From Forager Brewery to a brand of their own
Humble Forager Brewery was founded in 2019 by Austin Jevne. He was co-founder and head brewer of Forager Brewery, which opened in September 2015 in Rochester, Minnesota. That brewery started in a gutted supermarket, which Jevne and Annie Henderson spent eight months converting, using furniture and materials they gathered locally.
The idea came about when Henderson was looking for local beer for a local fundraiser and tried Jevne's own beer. He loves wild beers and likes brewing them, and according to Hop Culture that showed up in the name Forager. With Humble Forager he later set up a brand of his own. The brewery describes itself as Rochester born, Midwest brewed, and globally enjoyed. Its mission: thoughtful craft beers, wherever adventure takes you.
Beer with ingredients from around the world
According to the brewery, the beers come from a mix of traditional brewing methods and current trends, with ingredients and flavour inspiration from all over the world. The website lists four guiding principles: Think Globally, Forage Locally, Live Humbly and Drink Adventurously. In practice this means ingredients from growers who care about sustainability, and buying from local businesses and farms.
The range is broad. There are smoothie-style sours made with real fruit purée, hoppy beers, lagers, and stouts and porters that, according to the brewery, are reminiscent of grandma's pecan pie. There is also Humble Bumble, a line of fruit seltzers made from 100% real fruit, sweetened with honey. The ingredients change per season, and the brewery regularly brews together with fellow brewers.
Humble Forager Brewery at Hoptimaal
So far we've had one beer from them: Humble Forager Dowdle Dart, a 14% stout in a 35.5 cl package. It is highly rated on Untappd. The selection changes, so check the brewery page to see what is in stock right now.
You drink a stout of this strength more slowly than a hoppy beer. Take it out of the fridge half an hour before opening, pour it into a small glass or share it with someone. That brings out the flavours better. If hoppy beers from them come in, drink those as fresh and cool as possible.
