From the lower level to Lawrenceville
The name Lolev comes from 'Lower Level'. That was the brewers' project name, taken from the term their mother used for the basement where they started homebrewing. She insisted it was called the 'lower level' and not a basement, because the space was clean, organised and in order. According to the brewers, it was a brewery before they realised it themselves.
Today the flagship location is in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, on Butler Street. That site is both production brewery and taproom, in a former early Ford dealership from 1912. The beer you drink there is brewed on the other side of the wall. A second taproom in Zelienople is in a former Barq's bottling plant, which was in operation until the 1970s.
Hops as the starting point
On their own site they put it like this: they hunt for hops, not for varieties but for specific lots. To do that they work with specialist growers around the world, to find the hops that are worth building a complete beer around.
Their own description of the style is Ultra Hopped Ale: pronounced hop character, real balance and beer that asks you to slow down and pay attention. They say they follow every step of the process and keep refining it, because every beer has a purpose. The line-up includes names like Bengal Tiger, Blue Agate, Ball Python, Onyx, Priam and Double Priam.
