Clark and Barbara Lewey founded Toppling Goliath Brewing Company in 2009 in Decorah, Iowa. According to the brewery, that followed great success with home brewing. In less than ten years, Toppling Goliath grew into a name known worldwide for IPAs and barrel aged stouts.
The brewery now distributes in 30 US states and makes more than 40 beers that rotate throughout the year. In Decorah itself, Toppling Goliath has a taproom with a kitchen, where you can eat lunch and dinner.
Hoppy IPAs and barrel aged stouts
The core of the range is twofold: IPAs and barrel aged stouts. Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout is an example of the latter. Then there are the Sue variants. According to The Gazette, the brewery won four gold medals in 2023, most of them with beers from the Sue range.
In 2021, Toppling Goliath was named Grand National Champion of the US Beer Open, and Beer Advocate named the brewery number 2 in the world. In 2025, the brewery worked with Vesterheim on a barrel aged stout with notes of caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and bourbon, to mark 200 years of Norwegians in America.

Drink hoppy beers like these as fresh as possible and cool, not ice cold, so the hops come through well. That applies especially to the Double Dry Hop. If you come across a barrel aged stout from them, take your time and drink it slower and a little warmer.
