A farm in Tourpes
Brasserie Dupont is in Tourpes, a village near Leuze-en-Hainaut in the west of Hainaut. The brewery is part of a farm that goes back to 1759. In 1844 the farm became a farmhouse brewery making honey beers and saison beers to quench the thirst of farm workers in the summer heat.
In 1920 Alfred Dupont bought the brewery for his son Louis, who would rather have left for Canada. Louis brought the saison recipe back to life, and Saison Dupont grew out of it. After the war, engineer Sylva Rosier took over and launched the pilsner Rédor. His son Marc Rosier became a pioneer of organic beers with the Moinette Biologique and the Saison Bio in 1990.
Olivier Dedeycker has run the brewery since 2002. He is an engineer and brewer and has worked there since 1990. He carries on the craft that has been passed down over four generations.
Saison as the flagship
Saison Dupont (6.5%) is the core of the house. The beer is top-fermented and bottle-conditioned. It tastes dry, with a firm bitterness and spicy, phenolic aromas in which clove stands out. Citrus notes such as blood orange and lemon come with it. Saison Dupont accounts for 36% of annual production.
The hop choice is typical. Dupont prefers large amounts of aromatic hops over high-alpha varieties for a sharp bitterness. In Saison Dupont, East Kent Golding and Styrian Golding dominate. Besides the saisons, the brewery makes Moinette Blonde, the pilsner Rédor and Blanche du Hainaut, among others.
The saison line recently got new labels. According to the brewery, the recipes, the craft and the taste do not change as a result.

Drink a saison cool, not ice-cold, so the spicy and citrus side comes through well. Because the beer is bottle-conditioned, pour slowly into a roomy glass for a good head. Drink them young rather than old: dry, bitter and lively is where this beer is at its best.
