From dairy to brewery in Boortmeerbeek
Brouwerij Haacht is in Boortmeerbeek, in the Flemish Region. The site was first home to the 'Melkerij van Haecht', a small dairy. In 1897 Eugène De Ro started working there, an engineer in the fermentation industry whom the brewery itself calls its founder. On 14 June 1898 he brewed his first top-fermented beer.
Four years later, bottom-fermented beer followed. It went down so well that by 1913 the 'Brouwerij en Melkerij van Haecht' was among the top of the Belgian brewing world. In 1929 milk production stopped and the brewery went all in on beer. In 1937 it reached a record of 578,000 hectolitres a year.
Today Haacht doesn't call itself the biggest of the big, but the biggest of the small, independent breweries. The company is a Belgian family brewery and focuses on Belgium, the Netherlands and France, with exports to the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.
Brands from pilsner to abbey beer
Haacht works with a broad range and gives each brand its own identity. Primus is the house's Belgian pilsner. Tongerlo is the abbey beer range, brewed in the tradition of bottle conditioning. Super 8 is a series of eight beers that give well-known Belgian styles their own twist. That series started in 2017. Flandrien is brewed with aroma hops, coriander and touches of oak and vanilla, and Mystic is the brewery's kriek.
Innovation is mostly in alcohol-free beer. Haacht's 0.0 beers have already won international gold medals at the World Alcohol-Free Awards. On Untappd you can see that the brewery also scores at the very top with the Tongerlo beers: the PRIOR Tripel is one of Haacht's best-rated beers there.
Tongerlo at Hoptimaal
From Haacht we have the Tongerlo PRIOR Tripel at 9% in 33 cl. It's a tripel and, within our Haacht selection, also the highest rated on Untappd. If you want to get to know the brand, this is a logical place to start.
Pour the tripel cool, but not ice cold, so the maltiness and the spicy yeast come out well. At 9% alcohol, it's best to drink it slowly, for example with a cheese board or a roast. Store the bottle cool and dark and take your time drinking it.
