A family brewery in Ertvelde since 1784
The history of Brouwerij Van Steenberge begins in 1784 in Ertvelde, in East Flanders. It started out as a farm brewery under the name De Peer, a small agricultural business that gradually grew into a proper brewing company. Six generations of brewers later, the brewery is still an independent family business.
An important moment came at the end of the twentieth century. Van Steenberge then took over the recipes and the yeast of the Augustinian monks of Ghent. That kept an old brewing tradition alive and gave the brewery a range of special beers.
You can also visit the brewery. Bar Baptist is above the brewery, and among the hop fields you'll find Hopspot, a microbrewery with its own bar.
Top fermentation and its own yeast
Van Steenberge sticks to top fermentation. According to Global Beer, the brewery works with its own yeast strain, and that gives the beers their recognisable depth. The best-known names are Gulden Draak and Piraat. The brewery also brews Augustijn, Baptist, Bornem, Gentse Tripel and Export 1784, among others.
Fourchette is a tripel made in collaboration with top chefs and meant to be drunk with food. You taste a mild bitterness with citrus and floral notes. De Garre was originally a beer for the hidden café of the same name in Bruges and comes in at 11%. Monk’s Café is a mildly sour oud bruin, according to Global Beer a recipe from the early years of the brewery.
Van Steenberge at Hoptimaal
Van Steenberge is mostly tripels in our range, supplemented with a witbier and a bock. These are De Garre Tripel, Fourchette (33 cl and 75 cl), Baptist Wit and Leutebok 2004. The strength runs from 5 to 11%. De Garre Tripel and Fourchette are among the highest-rated beers on Untappd. The range changes, so check the webshop to see what's in stock now.
According to the brewery, the top-fermented beers taste best in the right glass, with the sediment and a firm head of foam. Drink Baptist Wit and Fourchette well chilled, and the freshness and the bitters come out best. You drink De Garre at 11% more slowly and a little less cold, so the warm notes have room.
