What we know about Norm Brewing
Little is on record about the origins of Norm Brewing in the sources we have. The website mentions no founding year and no founders, so we don't fill those in ourselves.
What is clear: the brewery puts hops first. Their slogan is 'Let the hops shine' and they present themselves as a maker of modern and seasonal craft beers. Their philosophy comes down to this: brew what they like to drink themselves, without limits. That results in a wide range of beers, from pale ales and IPAs to stouts and lagers.
Juicy, hazy beers full of hops
Norm Brewing goes for saturated, juicy and hazy beers: pales, IPAs, DIPAs and TIPAs. According to the brewery, this does not come at the expense of the quality of the ingredients. They like to play with hops: blending, searching for brand-new varieties from all over the world and, where possible, working with small growers.
You can see this in the limited editions. KIA ORA is an NZ IPA with Nelson Sauvin, Peacharine and Southern Cross. Radiant is a double IPA with Nectaron, Idaho 7, Riwaka and Citra, at 8%. Hive Mind, a collaboration with Hop Hooligans, is an NZ IPA with Motueka and Riwaka. Inner Sun is an IPA with Idaho 7, Deep Cut Cascade and Chinook CGX.
Hops are the heart of the project, but fruited sours, stouts and lagers are also part of their DNA, according to the brewery. Think of Days Like This, a West Coast Pilsner, and a traditional Helles of 4.8%.
Norm Brewing at Hoptimaal
Our focus is on their IPAs. We have had five Norm beers, all IPA, in 44 cl and 33 cl and with a strength between 6.8 and 8%. The range changes, so not everything is always in stock. On Untappd, Norm Radiant, Norm The Bee's Knees, Norm Hive Mind, Norm KIA ORA and Norm Solar, among others, are highly rated.
Drink hoppy beers like these as fresh as possible and cold from the fridge. The hop aroma is at its best when the beer is young, so don't wait too long. With the stronger double IPAs of around 8% you can take it slower and let them stand a little longer in the glass.
