A car accident as the start of the brewery
Bad Bones is an independent nano-brewery in Dunham, a village in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, in the Brome-Missisquoi region. The idea for the brewery came after brewer Zack Heuff survived a near-fatal car accident.
The accident happened on Thursday 20 January 2022. It was about -30 degrees, and there was black ice under blowing snow. His car lost control just as a truck was passing. He was working for a brewery in Montreal at the time. He described his recovery in a series of blogs on the Bad Bones website.
According to the brewery, the recipes, flavours and ideas reflect that experience: turning a deeply negative event into something positive that everyone can share.
Bold flavours and plenty of hops
Bad Bones describes its own beer as beer with bold flavours and extra-hopped ales. What exactly comes to market is not fixed: the brewery announces new beers every week on Instagram.
The brewery has its own taproom on rue Bruce in Dunham. In our range the IPA dominates: of the eleven beers we have had from Bad Bones, ten are IPAs. We have also had one stout. That fits a brewery that names extra hops as its starting point.
Bad Bones at Hoptimaal
We have had eleven beers from Bad Bones, with strengths from 6.5 to 11.9%. The packaging is large: 47 cl is the most common, with 47.3 cl and 37.5 cl also appearing. On Untappd, Bad Bones THE RAMP, Bad Bones The Driver, Bad Bones CRASH, Bad Bones Scar Tissue, Bad Bones HEMOSTAT and Bad Bones EKG are rated highest. Which beers are in stock changes; check this page for the current range.
Drink the IPAs as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops stay sharp, and keep them in the fridge. With the stronger beers, towards 11.9%, take it easy: slightly less cold and in a smaller glass, or share a large bottle with someone.
