Two friends from Gatineau
Brasserie du Bas-Canada comes from Gatineau, in the Canadian province of Québec. The brewery was founded by Gabriel Girard-Bernier and Marc-André Cordeiro-Lima, two friends who had been homebrewing for a few years before they took the step. According to TasteAtlas, that happened in 2017.
The brewery is independent and has two taprooms in Gatineau, with food. One of them is on Boulevard de la Gappe. According to its own website, the new brewery in the Hautes-Plaines area is now open. The name refers to the history of the region.
Heavily hopped and dark
Their reputation rests on two poles: aggressively hopped IPAs and decadent imperial stouts. On tap you might find a double dry-hopped imperial IPA of over eight percent, but also a fruited sour, a kellerbier or a Belgian tripel.
TasteAtlas names the HYPA series as their flagship: hazy, fruity, double dry-hopped IPAs that have gained cult status among fans of juicy, aromatic beers.
Brasserie du Bas-Canada at Hoptimaal
With us you'll find mostly their IPAs, plus stouts, a few barleywines and a saison. The strength runs from 6 to 11.9 percent. The beers come in large formats of 47 cl and 75 cl. Highly rated on Untappd are, among others, Brasserie du Bas La Torre, Du Bas-Canada Substance, Brasserie du Bas Monument #5 and Brasserie du Bas Oscillation #3.
Drink the IPAs as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops stay in the foreground. Pour the stouts and barleywines more slowly: let them warm up a little and take your time, because the stronger beers clearly gain from it.
