Three friends from the Montreal metal scene
Messorem began as a project of Marc-André Filion, Sébastien Chaput and Vincent Ménard. They met in the early 2000s in Montreal's underground music scene. Chaput plays guitar in the technical metal band Ion Dissonance, studied business administration and finance, and keeps the books. Ménard played drums, homebrewed for years, took a brewing course, did an internship at Auval Brewing and then worked for two years as a brewer at Les Trois Mousquetaires. Filion raps and designed the brand.
According to the brewery itself, it started in 2015 with Friday evenings spent drinking the best beers from their cellars with friends. They wanted to make beers in the vein of Other Half, Grimm, Hudson Valley and American Solera, without having to cross borders. In 2019 the brewery opened at 2233 Rue Pitt, along the Lachine Canal. The name is Latin: messorem means reaper, bracitorium stands for brewery. Together: the brewery of the Grim Reaper.
Hoppy, sour and barrel-aged
Messorem focuses on IPAs, sour beers and barrel-aged beers. On their own site they describe themselves as an industrial microbrewery with a taproom. The brewers set strict standards for flavour, mouthfeel and appearance: what is in the glass is exactly the intended result.
The range is wide. It runs from beers with a low alcohol percentage to strong double IPAs and stouts aged on bourbon barrels. Sources mainly mention the creamy IPAs and the lagers. One example from the barrel line is a stout that spent 32 and 34 months on Willett bourbon barrels, with Brazil nuts and vanilla. In the taproom the brewery works with Mitch Deli for food, and there is a large terrace by the canal.
Messorem at Hoptimaal
In our shop, Messorem is mostly about IPAs, with stouts, a few sour beers, lagers and a saison alongside. The strength ranges from 4.7 to 11.9 percent and the beers come in sizes from 37.5 to 47.3 cl. On Untappd it is mainly the barrel-aged releases that are rated highly, such as Messorem Élévation BA, Messorem Commémoration B.A. and Messorem Carburation B.A. Messorem Temporalis #0058 and the A7Y7 collaborations also score well. Stock changes, so check the shop to see what is in right now.
Drink hoppy beers as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops and the creamy mouthfeel come through best. Keep them in the fridge until you open them. With heavy stouts and barrel-aged beers you can take it slower: serve them a little less cold and take your time, so you can taste the barrel, vanilla and chocolate.
