From contract brewer to own brewery in Amersfoort
Rock City Brewing was founded by, among others, brewer Koen Overeem and his brother Walter. They started in 2014 as a contract brewer. The first beer was Koene Ridder, a Belgian tripel in which citrus aromas from coriander seed and hops come together. In 2017 a successful crowdfunding campaign followed for their own brewery. In 2018 it opened, together with a brewpub, at Mijnbouwweg 15 in Amersfoort.
The name refers to the city's nickname: Keistad. According to the story, residents dragged a boulder to the city in the seventeenth century, in exchange for beer. The logo uses the city colors red and white and a shield with Joris and the Dragon, known from the Amersfoort city coat of arms.
At Rock City, taste comes before style
Koen Overeem says himself that the starting point has always been taste, not a particular beer style. The recipes begin with the taste experience they want to create. Full, creamy beers come out of that. With hops, he mainly looks for the fresh, fruity side, and getting that out well is what he calls the challenge.
They're not entirely free of styles. Their wheat beer is now called Fruity White, because beer lovers need something to hold on to when choosing. At the brewery they make all sorts: from IPA and tripel to bock and stout.
You can taste it on the spot. The brewpub has an open kitchen with a large smoker, more than twenty taps and a view of the copper kettles. Every first Saturday of the month there is a tour at 3 pm, lasting about 45 minutes.
Rock City at Hoptimaal
In our range, Rock City is mostly about IPA: eleven of the twenty-one beers we have had. You'll also find pale ale, stout, lager and pilsner, tripel, witbier, blond and bock. The beers come in 33 and 44 cl and range in strength from 0.5 to 14%. Highly rated on Untappd are Rock City Nessi (Little Giants), Whaka Nui, Hop Hammer (Orange Label), Cheeky Bastard, Powder Junkie and Mad Monkey, among others.
Drink the hoppy beers as fresh as possible and cool, around 6–8 °C. That's when the fruity hop aromas come out best. Pour heavier beers, such as the stouts and bocks, more gently and slightly less cold, so they show more flavor.
