Two beer fanatics in Utrecht
De Kromme Haring starts with Stephen Grigg, a biologist and homebrewer. He travelled from America to the Netherlands via the United Kingdom, brewed homebrews along the way and eventually stayed on at Utrecht University.
In Utrecht he met Gijs van Wiechen, a beer connoisseur with roots close to the Dutch-Belgian border. Gijs stepped out of his academic career, dived into the beer world and became manager of Kafe Belgie. Through mutual friends he got hold of one of Stephen's homebrews, with the request to say what he thought of it. He found it one of the best beers he had ever tasted.
After a few cautious emails they decided to go on together. In 2014 De Kromme Haring was born, a name Stephen came up with in a fever dream. At first they brewed on commission for local bars. In September 2016 the brewpub opened on the Europalaan, with its own tanks and a cosy pub where friends could drink together. By now it also has a terrace, pizza and a programme that includes concerts, game nights and festivals.
English malt, American hops and yeast
According to the brewery itself, it's all about beer that draws on the tradition of classic beers, but also pushes the limits of flavour. They value English malt and American hops, but they call yeast the most important thing: fermentation gives a beer its soul. That's why they choose yeast deliberately from their own library of both clean and wild strains, and keep a close eye on yeast health throughout the whole brewing process.
The range at Hoptimaal shows that breadth: IPA, pale ale, saison, stout, sour beer and a bock, with a strength of 0.3 to 12 percent. The barrel-aged beers De Kromme Haring Beluga Barrel-aged - De Gekroonde Brandersketel and De Kromme Haring Beluga Barrel-aged - Ardnahoe are among the highest rated on Untappd, as are Whale Shark, Barbarian Fishing Teorem, Mudskipper and Warmouth.
De Kromme Haring at Hoptimaal
You'll find De Kromme Haring here in 33 cl. The focus is on IPA, and you'll also find saison, stout, sour beer, pale ale and bock. What's in stock changes, so check the brewery page for the current selection.
Drink the hoppy beers as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops stay lively. Keep them in the fridge and don't let them sit for months. The heavier stouts and the barrel-aged beers you serve more slowly: let them warm up for a few minutes out of the fridge, and the riper aromas come through better.
