From pilsner brewer to craft brewery
Lervig started in 2003 in Stavanger. The trigger was that production of Tou beer was leaving the city. Local hospitality businesses and other pillars of the community wanted the region to keep its own brewery and backed the new company.
In the first years it was mainly about pilsner as a replacement for Tou pilsner. From 2003 to 2005 it was brewed at Macks Ølbryggeri in Tromsø. In 2005 production moved to Hillevåg in Stavanger, where the company is still based.
The turning point came in 2010, when the American Mike Murphy became head brewer. Under him, Lervig moved towards craft beer, with Lucky Jack American Pale Ale among others.
A wide range with heavy stouts as the centre of gravity
Lervig brews widely. According to its own website, the range runs from easy-drinking pilsner and pale ale to heavy barrel aged stouts, barley wines and sours. The brewery says it makes beers it likes to drink itself and does not sacrifice quality to cost.
After the change of course in 2010, hoppy ales, imperial stouts, barley wines and barrel aged beers grew into the core. According to Wikipedia, heavy imperial stouts and hoppy New England IPAs are the most popular beers. For its cask work, Lervig has the Rackhouse programme, a barrel-aging programme.
Lervig has collaborated with To Øl, Põhjala, Mikkeller, Evil Twin and Beavertown, among others, and in 2014 was in the RateBeer Top 100 best brewers in the world. The beers go to more than thirty countries. In Stavanger the brewery also has its own brewpub, Lervig Local.
Lervig at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal you will find a wide Lervig range. Stout is the biggest group, followed by IPA. There are also pale ale, amber, barleywine, pilsner and cider. The strength ranges from 0.5 to 16.4 percent. The beer mostly comes in 33 cl, with 37.5 cl and 50 cl as well.
On Untappd it is mainly the Rackhouse beers that get high ratings, such as Lervig Piece of Cake By Rackhouse, LERVIG Fine Art By Rackhouse and LERVIG Fable By Rackhouse. LERVIG Midnight Snack and LERVIG Trouble Maker also score well.
Drink IPAs and pale ales as fresh as possible and cool, at around 6 to 8 °C. Pour heavy stouts and barrel aged beers more slowly: let them warm up a little to about 10 to 12 °C, and the complexity comes through better.
