From nomadic project to a permanent home in Lewes
Beak began as a nomadic project of Daniel Tapper, a writer on food and drink. For years he worked on his recipes, together with friends at a number of the best breweries in the United Kingdom.
In 2020 the project found a permanent home in Lewes, in the English county of East Sussex. Beak also runs a taproom and a street food canteen there. Lewes has its own beer history: in the nineteenth century, a large part of the town's prosperity came from brewing.
Hoppy IPAs and a wide range
According to the brewery itself, Beak is best known for hop-forward IPAs. But it doesn't stop there: the range runs from fresh, clear pilsners to lavish imperial stouts.
On its own webshop, for example, there is a gift pack with Old Fashioned Impy Stout and coffee from Tate. That shows that Beak likes to brew heavier and darker beers outside the IPAs as well.
Beak at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we have had four IPAs from Beak, all in 44 cl and with a strength of 8–10%. On Untappd, Beak Greens, Beak Mesa, Beak Yeahnoyeah and Beak Levels are rated highest. They are out of stock at the moment, so check the brewery page to see what's available now.
Drink these strong IPAs as fresh as possible. Hops are volatile and quickly lose aroma. Store the beer cool and serve it chilled, but not ice cold, so the hops and the fruity side come into their own.
