How Northern Monk began in Leeds
Russell Bisset started Northern Monk in July 2013. He didn't have much money, so he chose 'cuckoo brewing': brewing small batches at other breweries while building a brand. This model is also known as gypsy brewing. For the brewing itself, he approached the award-winning home brewer David Bishop.
The first batches of New World IPA and Strannik Imperial Stout came from Hambleton's Ales in Ripon, North Yorkshire. That brewery normally made classic styles such as bitter, exclusively for cask. The first two beers were launched at a party at The Sparrow in Bradford.
The company is based in a Grade II-listed mill building in Holbeck, in the centre of Leeds, a district that was in the middle of the Industrial Revolution. The address is The Old Flax Store in Marshalls Mill. The Refectory bar is also part of Northern Monk.
The beer and style of Northern Monk
New World became the brewery's core IPA. Strannik kept coming back as a winter seasonal beer. In 2016, Eternal Session IPA won bronze in the Session IPA category at the World Beer Cup. That made Northern Monk the first British brewery with a medal in an IPA category at an American beer competition, among 110 competitors in that category.
The range is wide: IPAs, pale ales, stouts and low-alcohol beers. On their own site you can see recent releases such as an 8.4% West Coast DIPA and an 8.2% double chocolate mudcake stout, alongside a 5.6% hazy pale ale. They say themselves that they want to make the best beer experiences in the world.
Northern Monk at Hoptimaal
With us, it's all about the IPAs from Northern Monk, in 44 cl. The strength ranges from 0.3% to 8.2%, so there's also a low-alcohol hazy IPA among them. Highly rated on Untappd are PATRONS PROJECT 53.01 (an NZ IPA), PATRONS PROJECT 20.06 (a West Coast DIPA) and REIMAGINED DREAM LINE FORMS ONE // SKGN, an AF HAZY IPA. What's in stock changes from time to time, so check this page to see what's available now.
Drink hoppy beers like these as fresh as possible and properly chilled, around 6 to 8 °C. That keeps the aroma and bitterness sharp. A DIPA of 8% or more tastes best from a tulip or stemmed glass, so the aroma has room to open up.
