From home nano brewery to their own brewery
Tartarus Beers was founded in 2020 by Jack Roberts and Jordan Orpen, in the middle of the pandemic. Jack built a 100-litre nano brewery at his house in Horsforth and brewed there for himself for a few years at first. During the lockdown he made the move to a commercial brewery. In February 2021 he went full time with Tartarus, and in October 2021 Jordan joined.
After that they brewed as a cuckoo brewer at a larger site. According to Brewser, Tartarus moved to its own 5000 square feet brewery in 2022. The official site names Sheepscar, just outside the centre of Leeds, as its home base. Jack is head brewer, Jordan runs the rest of the business and Sam makes the artwork for the labels.
Strong beers with a Tartarus twist
The first three beers were a Belgian tripel, a saison and a 17% Russian imperial stout. They chose those styles on purpose: they love Belgian beer and stronger styles, and these are not hype beers. The imperial stout is called Abaddon and became well known among beer drinkers and other brewers.
Their starting point is brew anything but boring: traditional styles, but always with a twist. Examples are Qilin, a purple IPA with butterfly pea flower, and Umibōzu, an imperial gose with squid ink, wakame and yuzu, brewed for their second birthday. Together with Vault City they made The Mackenzie Poltergeist, a 14.1% imperial pastry stout with dulce de leche. The brewery is named after the Greek hell and every beer carries the name of a mythical creature or a legend, with its own story to go with it.
Tartarus Beers at Hoptimaal
With us the focus is on stouts: of the eleven Tartarus beers we have had, nine are stouts. We also had a barleywine and an IPA. The strength ranges from 8 to 15% and you find them in 33, 37.5 and 44 cl. The range changes, so not everything is always in stock.
Highly rated on Untappd are the barrel aged versions of Jersey Devil and Nyx, the Maple Syrup Barrel Aged Bokkenrijder and the regular Nyx. Drink heavy stouts and barrel aged beers slowly and not too cold, in a small glass, so the depth of the beer gets room. A hoppy beer from the range you drink cool and as fresh as possible.
