Two cycling friends with a stove
Jeroen Bax and Sepp Jansen were both members of the Groningen student cycling club. Besides cycling, they shared another interest: brewing their own beer. In 2013 they started experimenting on the stove in Jeroen's parents' house. Their friends liked the beers, and in 2014 they moved to larger volumes through contract brewing. That's how the Baxbier brand came about.
After a successful crowdfunding campaign, Baxbier opened its own brewery with a taproom in the autumn of 2016, in the north-west of the city on the Reitdiep. Extra fermentation tanks soon followed. Today about 25 people work there. The taproom has a terrace on the water and you can book a tour with a tasting.
Serious about beer, playful in the name
The core range consists of Kon Minder, Koudvuur, Abbey Rave and Abel's Ale. Koudvuur is a smoked porter from the brewery's early years, Abbey Rave is a Belgian tripel and Abel's Ale is a Pacific IPA, named after the Groningen explorer Abel Tasman. Kon Minder and Koudvuur won international awards.
Baxbier also brews seasonal beers, one-off batches and collabs with breweries from the Netherlands and abroad. There is also the Bandwagon series with big IPAs. The motto is Seriously Playful: they go into the smallest detail with recipes and techniques, while labels and beer names are allowed some humour. That explains names like Kon Minder, Boobytrap and Benidorm Brutalism.
Baxbier at Hoptimaal
We stock a modest selection: two IPAs, a tripel, a lager and a pale ale. Almost everything comes in 33 cl, with one beer in 44 cl. The strength ranges from 5 to 8.7%. On Untappd, Baxbier Partyboob, Baxbier Midnight Dipper, Baxbier SMaSH or Pass: Strata and Baxbier Abbey Rave, among others, are rated highly.
Drink the hoppy beers as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops and the freshness stay sharpest. At 8.7%, you pour the tripel Abbey Rave more slowly and let it warm up a few degrees, so more flavour comes out. The range changes, so check in the shop or on the site to see what's in stock now.
