A Brabant village brewery in Chaam
Dorpsbrouwerij de Pimpelmeesch is in Chaam, in Noord-Brabant. The village brewer was born and raised there, and you can taste that bond with the area in the beers. According to the brewery itself, his love of specialty beer began more than 25 years ago. He learned to brew and experimented with beers he likes to drink himself.
A visitor noted in 2016 that the brewery was founded in 2000 and that the beer was then brewed at 't Hofbrouwerijke in Beerzel, Belgium. In 2013 the brewery got its own 18-hectolitre brewing installation from Austria, placed in a former cow shed on an 18th-century farm.
Simple ingredients and two series
The village brewer sticks to water, malt, hops and yeast, with no extravagant ingredients. According to him, that first barrel of home-brewed beer grew into a wide range of beers, but the simplicity of the ingredients stayed.
The range falls into two series. The Chaam beers are a tribute to Belgian and German beer styles, each with its own characteristic aroma and flavour. The Brabant beers carry the bond with the region the village brewer comes from in their name.
Pimpelmeesch at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we had the Vurige Non from Pimpelmeesch, a 7% dubbel in 33 cl. The beer is rated highly on Untappd. The range changes, so check the brewery page to see which beers are in stock now.
You don't drink a dubbel ice-cold. Take it out of the fridge a quarter of an hour before drinking, at around 10–12 °C, so the malty and spicy side comes out better. Pour it into a tulip or goblet glass and take your time: at 7% this is a beer to drink slowly.
