Two school friends put Den Haag on the map
Kompaan was founded by Jeroen and Jasper, two school friends who have known each other longer than they haven't. They started brewing themselves in 2010, and it took two years before their first beer was ready: the blonde, dry-hopped beer that is now called Bondgenoot. The name refers to that friendship, two kompanen drinking together. The beers in the core range also carry the name of a type of friend, such as Kameraad, Bondgenoot and Bloedbroeder.
In 2014 the brewery moved to the Binckhorst, an industrial area in Den Haag. A year later came the move to the current building on Saturnusstraat. A crowdfunding campaign raised 150,000 euros for the bar next to the brewery, and Kompaan officially opened on 20 August 2015. In 2016 a 30-hectolitre brewhouse with four kettles, fermentation tanks and a bottling line followed. Since 2022 Kompaan also has a bar in the city centre, Binnenhaven on Torenstraat.
Bloedbroeder made Kompaan known
The breakthrough came in 2017. Bloedbroeder, a strong imperial stout with port, won gold and the title of Best Dutch Beer at the Dutch Beer Challenge, and gold in the Russian Imperial Stout category in Barcelona. In 2018 a certificate of excellence followed at the Brussels Beer Challenge. According to the brewery, this beer made Kompaan a household name.
The core range is broad: from a dry-hopped pilsner to that imperial stout with port, including Handlanger as a double IPA and Levensgenieter as a New England IPA. Kompaan also brews seasonal beers, collaborations and one-off beers. There is also a series of barrel aged specials that mature in whisky, bourbon or gin barrels, usually in small batches.
Kompaan at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal you will find Kompaan in 33 cl. The range runs from Thrill Seeker, an alcohol-free IPA of 0.3%, to Bloedbroeder at 9.1%. You will find IPAs, a witbier, a tripel, a bock and a stout. Maverick Monk, Levensgenieter, Tonka Bok and Bloedbroeder are among the highest-rated Kompaan beers on Untappd. What is in stock changes from moment to moment.
Drink the hoppy beers, such as Levensgenieter, as fresh as possible and well chilled. That is when the hops and the fruit come across best. With Bloedbroeder and other strong beers you can take it easier: pour them slightly less cold and take your time, because at 9.1% this is a beer to drink slowly.
