Four brothers from Alkmaar
Moersleutel started in 2016 in Alkmaar. Four brothers, Pim, Tom, Rob and Max Zomerdijk, had just finished their technical studies and wanted to prove to their father that they were better at everything, brewing included. The first attempt failed: what came out is something the Dutch call 'slootwater' (ditch water). They kept experimenting with styles and ingredients. That led to the first Moersleutel Barrel Blend, an Imperial Stout.
It is still a family business. According to the brewery, mother and father still help out. Max and Tom now run Zomerdijk Engineering, a company that builds machines for breweries. Moersleutel Craft Brewery is part of Zomerdijk Brewing & Blending. The brewery is located on the Diamantweg in Alkmaar.
Beer engineers who brew stouts and IPAs
Their motto is 'Beer Engineers at heart, brewers by choice'. They brew on a semi-automated brewing system that monitors the process, from temperature to the addition of ingredients. That way every batch should taste the same, from can or bottle.
The brewery itself calls barrel aged beers and stouts its specialty. Motor Oil is their Imperial Stout, and they also make pastry stouts with coffee, chocolate or vanilla, among other things. On the hoppy side they brew hazy NEIPAs and DIPAs. A Witbier and wild ales also appear in their own descriptions. According to a post by the brewery on LinkedIn, Macaroon Machine finished in 47th place in TasteAtlas's 100 Best Beers in the World list at the end of 2025.
Moersleutel at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal, Moersleutel has had a sizeable range: IPAs and stouts make up the majority, alongside a blonde, a Witbier (Belgian white beer) and a barleywine. The strength range runs from 5.5 to 14 percent and the beers come in cans of 33 or 44 cl. Highly rated on Untappd are Barcode: Silver & Laser Green, 10 Years: Recovery, Missing Gear and beers from the Craft Pastry Factory series, among others.
Drink the IPAs as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops stay sharp and fresh. Take the stouts and barrel aged beers more slowly. Take them out of the fridge a while before opening, pour them into a small glass and take your time. At 14 percent, part of the bottle or can is enough to share.
