From fruit warehouse to brewery
Stadshaven Brouwerij is an initiative of director Harm van Deuren, who also runs the Bierfabriek restaurants. Bierfabriek started in 2011 as a combination of microbrewery and restaurant, but those small breweries only brew for their own venue. Van Deuren wanted a bigger brewery that can also fill bottles, cans and kegs, preferably in Rotterdam.
That became a restored fruit warehouse of more than 5,000 m² in the Merwe-Vierhavens area (M4H), an old harbour area north of the Maas. In 1970 the fruit importer Velleman & Tas took over the site, after which the building became a warehouse for citrus fruit. The brewery started brewing in February 2021. The first guests followed in the waterside gastropub in July 2021.
By its own account, this is the second-largest independent craft beer brewery in the Netherlands, with 2 million litres a year. The brewery brews batches of 4,000 litres and has 19 fermentation tanks with a combined storage capacity of almost 200,000 litres. There is its own filling line for kegs, cans and bottles. Stijn Beurskens and Tobias Luckhof are listed on the site as brewers, Oliver Hudelmaier as brewery manager.
Beer with fruit and sea monsters on the label
The location sets the style. At the end of the brewing process, fresh fruit goes into the hop gun. According to marketer Nina Landl, this doesn't give you a truly fruity beer, but a subtle twist that enhances the flavour.
Every beer has a nautical story about a crew that sets off on an adventure for exotic fruit and runs into various sea monsters along the way. The Octopus Blond has a twist of cape gooseberry and blood orange. The Moray IPA uses carambola and mandarin and is meant as a spicy, bitter beer with bold artwork.
Octopus Blond and Moray IPA were the brewery's first beers in cans, made with NOMOQ. Sustainability is part of the approach: there are 1,000 solar panels on the roof and the spent grain goes to local farmers, including the Floating Farm in the harbour.
Stadshaven Brouwerij at Hoptimaal
With us you'll find Stadshaven Brouwerij in 33 cl, in the styles tripel, blond, witbier, IPA and bock. The strength ranges from 3.8 to 8.5%. Highly rated on Untappd are Stadshaven Brouwerij Piranha Tripel, Stadshaven Bock Rammer, Stadshaven Brouwerij Moray IPA and Stadshaven Brouwerij Octopus Blond, among others.
Drink the hoppy beers, such as the IPA, and the lighter styles fresh and cool, at around 6 to 8 °C. The tripel and the bock can take it a bit slower and warmer, at around 10 to 12 °C, so the flavour has more room.
