An estate from 1782 and a brewery from 1874
The estate has been in the hands of the same family since 1782. It was a farm where wine was grown, probably with a small wine house in season. In 1874 Michael Bayer founded the brewery, on the site of the old press house. In winter he brewed one type of beer.
In 1964 the youngest daughter Anna married the farmer Erwin Kundmüller. From 1969 they ran the brewery inn together. Erwin brewed in winter, because there was no refrigeration yet. He made around 350 hectolitres a year: amber-coloured, unfiltered beer that lay in large 600-litre wooden barrels. Open fermentation was only gradually replaced by fermentation tanks from 1990.
In 1989 Roland Kundmüller joined the business. During his training, Weiherer Lager was the only beer that was brewed and served on tap. He introduced the Weiherer Bock, together with the annual tapping of the first keg of the new bock season. In 1990 a new brewhouse was built, which is still in use. In 1997 the first beer was bottled.
Many awards for pils, kellerbier and rauchbier
According to its own webshop, Kundmüller is one of the most award-winning breweries in Germany. In 2025 the brewery was named Brewery of the Year at the Finest Beer Selection. The brewery also cites 33 medals at the European Beer Star, more than 70 at the World Beer Award and 6 at the World Beer Cup.
Individual beers are on that list too. Weiherer Rauch won gold at the World Beer Cup in 2025. Weiherer Kräusen Hell was named Best Kellerbier there in 2024. Weiherer Pils became world champion at the World Beer Awards in 2023. In 2022 the brewery also won the European Beer Star's Future Award for sustainability.
The core stays Franconian: lagers, kellerbier and pils, supplemented with bock, weizen and a few hoppier detours. At Hoptimaal, the pils with green hops and the hopfenweizen are good examples.
Kundmüller at Hoptimaal
So far, 14 beers from Kundmüller have come in at our shop. Most of them are lager or pils, supplemented with a pale ale, a weizen, a bock and an IPA. Everything comes in 50 cl and the strength ranges from 0.5 to 8.8%.
On Untappd, Kundmüller Weiherer Grünhopfen Pils, Kundmüller Weiherer Hopfenweizen, Kundmüller GrischBEERla, Kundmüller Weiherer Summer Ale, Weiherer Keller and Kundmüller Weiherer Keller-Pils, among others, are highly rated.
Drink the pils, the kellerbier and the hoppy beers as fresh as possible and well chilled. That brings out the hops and the freshness best. Pour the bock more slowly and slightly less cold, so the maltiness has room.
