Two ice hockey fans from the Baltic Sea
Sudden Death Brewing Co. comes from Olli and Ricky. Both grew up in Timmendorfer Strand on the Baltic Sea, where ice hockey has a long tradition. Olli played actively himself and still gets on the ice in winter.
Ice hockey led them to beer. In recent years the two regularly travelled to the US to watch their favourite NHL team, the Boston Bruins, live. On those trips they (re)discovered beer.
In 2022 they built their new brewery, which according to Untappd is located in Lübeck. The name refers to both worlds. In ice hockey, overtime is decided by the first goal, similar to the golden goal in football.
Hazy IPAs, sour beers and stout
The best way to see what Sudden Death makes is the recent releases on their own site. There you'll find hazy IPAs, hazy double IPAs and a hazy triple IPA, but also a smoothie sour, an imperial stout and a pilsner.
On Untappd the brewery is listed as a microbrewery. Besides their own releases you'll see a Hop Selection series with Citra, Mosaic and Trifecta, among others, and collaborations with Vault City, Oso Brew Co, Brew York, Puhaste Brewery and Le Ketch, among others. On Untappd, Murder Mime, My Precious Nelson, Dr. Tweak’s Peach Creeps, Hop Selection - Citra and Submerged score high. Murder Mime is a smoothie sour, My Precious Nelson a hazy triple IPA and Submerged an imperial stout.
Drink the hoppy beers fresh and cool, and don't keep them too long: hop aromas fade. With the heavier beers, such as the stout, you can take it slower. Take them out of the fridge a little earlier and you get more out of the glass.
