Two Augsburgers and a brewery of their own
In the winter of 2016, Enzo Frauenschuh and Matthias Gruber, both from Augsburg, founded FrauGruber Brewing. The name is a contraction of their surnames: FRAUenschuh plus GRUBER.
They brewed their first beers in the spring of 2017 as gypsy brewers (Lohnbrauer) at the Old Factory in Gundelfingen. Within three years they were exporting their beers regularly to more than 20 countries.
According to the brewery, their ideas and experiments were hard to realise without a brewery of their own. That came in January 2020. In their own words, the aim was a kind of lifestyle and a community around beer, with attention to sustainable action and to the value of beer.
Their own barley and their own yeast
FrauGruber wants as much influence as possible over technology and raw materials. They have the brewing barley of the Steffi and Marthe varieties grown by four farmers who are friends, and then malted by a nearby maltings. In 2019 this was about 11 hectares (around 60 tonnes), in 2020 about 40 hectares (around 220 tonnes). With this approach they want to avoid new high-yield varieties, where, according to them, things like full body and yeast behaviour fade into the background.
The 13 yeast strains they use are propagated in-house, to keep control of both the quality and the number of yeast cells. The hops come from the US, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and Bavaria, directly from hop farmers or via partners.
Their own webshop has categories for India Pale Ale, fruit beers, barrel-aged beers and traditional beers. The recent releases are mostly double and triple IPAs.
FrauGruber at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we have had 24 beers from FrauGruber, almost all of them IPA (22). There was also one stout and one lager or pilsner. Almost all the beers come in 44 cl, one in 50 cl, and the strength runs from 0.5 to 14.6%.
Highly rated on Untappd are Hand Selected, Bikini Bottom, 8th Anniversary Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, Under the Thunder, Soaked Oats and Weak As I Am.
Drink the IPAs as fresh as possible and properly cold, so the hops show best. Give the Barrel Aged Imperial Stout more time: serve it a little less cold, in a small glass, and drink it slowly.
