A wheat beer brewery in Kelheim
G. Schneider & Sohn is in the old town centre of Kelheim, close to the Danube. According to the brewery, the Weisses Bräuhaus is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria. The complex is more than 400 years old and is protected heritage. Duke Maximilian I inherited the right to brew wheat beer and started breweries all over Bavaria. The first one opened in Kelheim in 1607.
The Schneider family comes into the picture later. According to A Tempest in a Tankard, the brewery has brewed nothing but wheat beer since its founding in 1872. Georg Schneider I then bought the right to brew wheat beer from King Ludwig II, at a time when that beer style had long fallen out of favour. Since 1928 the Weisses Bräuhaus has been owned by the Schneider family. After the war, in 1945, Georg IV Schneider moved the brewery from Munich to Kelheim.
A century and a half after Georg I, a Schneider is still at the helm in Georg Schneider VI. Josef Lechner has been brewmaster and technical director since 2021.
Wheat beer between tradition and innovation
Schneider Weisse says it works with its own methods and natural, regional ingredients, and puts quality without compromise first, even when that takes more time and work. Brewmaster Lechner combines craftsmanship and tradition with curiosity about innovation. That leads to collaborations and new products, alongside the regular weizens.
You can also drink the beer from Kelheim on the spot: Schneider has brewery pubs in Kelheim and in two places in Munich, in Tal and in Berg am Laim. These are wheat beers with yeast: cloudy, fruity and with that typical weizen character of banana and clove. The Original, the Festweisse and the Hefeweissbier Naturtrüb are the beers that rate highest on Untappd among the ones we stock.
Schneider Weisse G. Schneider & Sohn at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal, Schneider Weisse G. Schneider & Sohn means weizens in 50 cl. The range runs from 4.9 to 6.2 percent alcohol and changes, so check the webshop to see what is in stock now.
Drink these beers as fresh as possible and cool, from a large weizen glass. Pour slowly and leave the yeast at the bottom of the bottle with the last bit of beer, for those who want that. This is the best way to keep the freshness and the fruity character of the beer. A Festweisse with a bit more alcohol can be drunk slightly less cold, so the flavours come through better.
