A family brewery from Hallerndorf
Rittmayer is one of the oldest breweries in the Forchheim district. The family has been brewing since 1422, after the margrave of the time gave it the right to brew. Because of the good beer, the brewery even received its own grant of arms from the Count of Kulmbach. The company is based in Hallerndorf, in the Fränkische Schweiz, and according to Beerwanderers it is by far the biggest brewery in the area.
In spring 2012, the new brewery on the edge of the village went into operation, right next to the filling centre. It has two brewhouses with a capacity of 50 hl, good for four brews a day. According to a visit report, the brewery runs without fossil fuels, using wood chips and a heat storage system. The master brewer is Kevin Düsel. The filling centre also fills bottles for other breweries.
Franconian classics and seasonal beers
Rittmayer brews according to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot of 1516. The core of the range is Franconian. The Landbier is a light, full-bodied beer of 4.9% with a fine malt aroma and a fruity malt flavour, less hoppy than a pilsner. They also brew Kellerbier and Hefeweizen. Rittmayer started with that Hefeweizen in 1988, the first Hallerndorfer Hefeweizen.
There is also a broad seasonal range. They make the Annafestbier for the folk festival in the Forchheim region, and the Winterweizen appears just before Christmas. If you look further, you'll find the Rauchbier Smoky George of 7%, the Aischbüffel Eisbock of 13% and an alcohol-free Kellerbier.
Rittmayer Hallerndorf at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal it's all about Rittmayer's lagers and pilsners, such as the Hell, the Hallerndorfer 1422 and the Pils - Bitter 42. They are between 4.9 and 5% and come in 33 and 50 cl. They are rated highly on Untappd.
These are beers that depend on freshness. Drink them fresh rather than after months in the cupboard, and serve them well chilled, around 6–8 °C. With the low strength, you can happily have a second glass.
