A city brewery in the centre of Amersfoort
Amersfoort was a beer town for centuries. The first beer is mentioned there in 1323, and until the seventeenth century almost a hundred breweries were based in the city. In 1969 Phoenix, the last large brewery in the city, closed.
After that came De Drie Ringen. The idea came from Johan and Marius Korthals-Altes, directors of the old Phoenix brewery. In 1989 the brewery reopened on the original site, where the outer walls date from 1626. The brewery itself counts 1626 as its start: according to its own site, it has been brewing in the historic centre since that year.
You drink the beer in the tasting room at Kleine Spui 18, where the copper kettles take centre stage. They also serve food there, such as broodje bal and croquettes, and you can book a High Beer with a tasting board of three of their own beers.
Belgian-style beers and a revived recipe
De Drie Ringen is not a hop brewery from the new wave. In 2019 a visitor tasted seven beers in the tasting room and called the range Belgian-oriented.
Vuurvogel, 7.0 percent, he described as a strong Belgian pale ale that you could also see as a dubbel. The beer is a recreation of a beer from the past. Ruige Rund Wit was a typical Belgian witbier. Stadsbier, also known as Amersfoorts Blond, is a session beer in Kölsch style. Zilver was brewed for the 25th anniversary of the reopened brewery.
The brewery has also released, among others, a bokbier (Dutch bock), a Biere du Patron and a dark stout. So the range runs from light and airy to dark and full.
