Two homebrewers and an old paper shop
Alberto Zamborlin and James Welsh met in 2013 at a homebrew club in Barcelona. Welsh ended up in the city through a job in the printing industry, but he comes from a family of cask ale brewers: his father spent most of his career at Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire. Zamborlin became a beer lover when he lived with an American homebrewer in Dublin.
They felt Barcelona had too little locally brewed, modern beer. Estrella dominated the market, so they didn't fancy a regular brewery trying to compete with it. They chose a brewpub, where most of the beer is sold on the spot. Their first location was an old paper shop on Carrer del Consell de Cent, in a neighbourhood their mentor Steve Huxley had recommended.
Hoppy beer from Barcelona
On its own website, Garage calls itself a modern beer brewer from Barcelona. There is a brewpub in Universitat, a bar in Poblenou and a mash bar on Casanova. The brewery itself is in Sant Andreu, where the taproom is only open during events. That is also where Garage held its monthly can releases, which in 2019 were more like a party with live music than a queue for cans.
They say they push the limits of hoppy beers. For their ninth anniversary they brewed four hoppy beers, each inspired by one of their locations, and paired them with four tracks by Barcelona musicians. Those also came out on an EP, Garage Sounds, Vol I.
Garage Beer Co. at Hoptimaal
From Garage we mainly stock IPAs, plus lager and pilsner and a porter. The strength ranges from 3.4 to 8.5 percent and they come in 33 or 44 cl. Highly rated on Untappd are Garage Bronze, Garage Coldstore Raw, Garage Piétiné, Garage Drumsticks, Garage OCATA and Garage SANTAKO, among others. What exactly is in stock changes, so check the shop.
Drink hoppy beers as fresh as possible and cool, at around 6 to 8 °C. That is where the hops and the freshness come out best. Drink the porter more slowly and a little warmer, so the roasted notes get more room. Serve lager and pilsner ice cold.
