From London to an old barn in Rupià
Michael Jones is from the North Island of New Zealand, Judit Piñol is Catalan. They met in London in 2010. Good beer was easy to find there, in Catalonia much less so: there were few Catalan craft beers and some seemed more like homebrew, with varying quality.
A visit in 2013 to friends at Grifter Brewing Company in Sydney planted the seed. In 2015 they brewed 30 litres for a wedding in France. The beer went down so well that they kept going, and in 2016 they decided to turn it into a brewery.
At first they brewed on commission at Popaire in Blanes and WHYM in Vilablareix. In time that turned out not to be financially viable, and they wanted their own recipes in their own brewery. In 2017 they signed the lease for an old barn just outside Rupià. The building was completely emptied and rebuilt. They reused wood and metal for the taproom, and made a table from the old staircase. Untappd lists 2019 as the brewery's birth year.
Hazy IPAs, double IPAs and everything in between
On Untappd, DosKiwis is classified as a nano-brewery and has 131 beers listed there. The focus is on IPAs: hazy IPAs, American IPAs and hazy imperial IPAs up to about 8.5%. There are also an English IPA, a German Pilsner called Bright Lucidity and an American Pale Ale in BeerAdvocate's listing.
On the dark side they make, among others, Ambidextrous, a foreign stout of 7%, Astroplane, a milk stout of 10.5%, and Gravity+, an imperial pastry stout. Fenix is a low-alcohol beer of 0.4%. The brewery also has a small kitchen in the taproom, with simple dishes made from local products.
DosKiwis at Hoptimaal
With us you will mainly find IPAs and lager or pilsner from DosKiwis. The range runs in strength from 0.4 to 8%. Most of the beers come in 44 cl, a few in 33 cl. Highly rated on Untappd are Jet, Lo-Fi, Magic Number, Slice, Solana and Serena, among others.
Drink the hoppy beers as fresh as possible and serve them cool, around 6–8 °C. That is when the hops and the fruit come out best. A pilsner or lager can be a bit colder. Drink a heavier stout more slowly and slightly warmer, so the richer flavours have room.
