From nomad brewer to their own brewery in Rota
Pablo founded Malandar in 2016 as a nomadic brewery, after he had been thinking about it for a few years. He took a brewing course in Málaga and picked up experience and recipes as a homebrewer in Madrid and in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, not far from Rota. The name is a tribute to Sanlúcar and the Atlantic coast. A malandar is the heavy walking through sand that the tide has made soft and wet, especially on the Punta del Malandar peninsula near Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
What began as a serious hobby became more purposeful in 2018, and the beers became known in Cádiz, throughout Andalusia and beyond. In 2022 Pablo built his own brewery with a taproom in Rota, which was ready at the end of that year. Laia, his partner, runs the taproom, which sits right next to the brewhouse and the fermentation tanks. The setup consists of a 10-hectolitre brewhouse, supplied by Tiantai. The first beers from the new brewery were a Helles, a Wheat Pale Ale and a West Coast IPA.
What Malandar brews
Pablo first became known mainly for his dark Pastry Stouts, but Malandar now brews much more. On Untappd the brewery is listed as a Nano Brewery with more than 180 beers. Among them are imperial pastry stouts with lactose, a Cold IPA, imperial New England IPAs in The Malandarian series and the Modern West Coast IPA Cadifornia. The brewery's own site also lists a core range that is described as gluten-free, including a Helles, a Pilsner and a session West Coast IPA, plus the fruity Swirl Sours.
According to the brewery itself, it is all about natural, recognisable beers made from good ingredients. At the brewery, the visitors from Craft Beer Nomads were mainly impressed by the Hang Loose West Coast IPA and the Hipster O Brother! NEIPA. They found the canned Pastry Stouts full of flavour, but not too sweet or heavy. The beer goes to craft beer pubs in Spain and is also exported, including to France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Malandar at Hoptimaal
With us you will mostly find Malandar as IPA in 44 cl, with a strength of 8–9%. Highly rated on Untappd are The Malandarian T.2 Capítulo 2, Bienaventurado, Muma and Gotán. What exactly is in stock changes from moment to moment, so check the webshop.
Drink hoppy beers like these as fresh as possible, because the hop aroma is then at its best. Serve them well chilled, but take them out of the fridge a few minutes before drinking. With a strong IPA, aroma and body then come through better than when served ice cold.
