From a garage in Giesing to Munich's second-largest private brewery
Giesinger Bräu started in 2006 in a small garage in Giesing, a district of Munich. The company's formal name is Giesinger Biermanufaktur und Spezialitäten Braugesellschaft mbH. According to its own website, the brewery has since grown into the second-largest private brewery in Munich.
The founder and managing director is Steffen Marx; Jonas Seidl is also a managing director. BeerTasting lists Tobias Weber as brewmaster. The brewery is based in WERK2 at Detmoldstraße 40, where it has its own deep well. It also has a Bräustüberl at Martin-Luther-Straße 2. Since 2021 it has been allowed to use the EU-protected designation Münchner Bier, and in 2026 it celebrates its twentieth anniversary.
Munich tradition with a modern twist
By its own account, Giesinger focuses on Munich brewing traditions. Brewing traditional styles and the Reinheitsgebot come first. The regular range consists of Münchner Helles, Weißbier, Dunkel, Märzen and several bock beers, plus seasonal beers, a small craft line, alcohol-free beer and a cola mix. Beyond Beer also mentions IPAs, porters and pale ales.
All beers are fresh and thermally untreated, so they are not heated to make them keep longer. According to Beyond Beer, they are unfiltered, unpasteurised and brewed in open fermentation tanks. The double bock Innovator, which is the centrepiece of the Starkbierfest, gets two weeks of fermentation and eight weeks of lagering. BeerTasting lists Feines Pilschen as an award-winning beer in 2018/2019.
Giesinger Bräu at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we had the Giesinger Bräu Festbier, the brewery's beer that is rated highest on Untappd in our range. It is a 6% lager in 50 cl. Our range changes, so check this page to see what is available now.
A festbier is best drunk fresh and cool, not ice cold, so the flavour can come into its own. Because Giesinger brews thermally untreated, store the beer cool and dark and drink it well before the best-before date. Pour it into a large glass and give it a few minutes to warm up a little.
