From monastery brewery to ducal brewhouse
Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee is in Tegernsee, in the German state of Bavaria. It began as a small Bräustibl, first of the Tegernsee monastery brewery and later of the ducal brewhouse. That Bräustüberl has since become one of the best-known wirtshaus inns in Bavaria, with a beer garden where you drink Tegernseer beer with a Brotzeit.
The old monastery brewery became the Königlich Braunen Brauhaus Tegernsee. King Max I. Joseph was the first Wittelsbacher brewer in Tegernsee and started a line of five generations of brewing Wittelsbachers. Queen dowager Friderike Caroline is also described as a skilled brewer. Since 1968 the brewery has been owned by Duke Max in Bavaria, and his daughter Anna now runs it.
Their beer: Hell, Spezial and other Bavarian classics
Tegernsee's beer sits in the traditional Bavarian corner: Helles, lagers and pilsners. A web shop that sells their beers lists, among others, Tegernseer Hell (4.8%), Max I Joseph (5.2%) and Spezial (5.6%), all in 50 cl.
Don't expect experiments with hops or barrels here. These are clean, easy-drinking Bavarian beers that fit the Bräustüberl tradition: beer with food, in company.
