A brewery on the Holy Mountain
Klosterbrauerei Andechs is in Andechs in Upper Bavaria, on the mountain the region calls the Holy Mountain. The place owes that name to Count Rasso of Diessen. In the tenth century he brought relics back from the Holy Land, which were later kept in a castle on the mountain. In the twelfth century Andechs grew into a place of pilgrimage.
In 1455 the Benedictines of Tegernsee took over the mountain from the Augustinian canons, at the request of Duke Albrecht III. From then on beer flowed, because hospitality was one of the order's core principles. After secularization in the Napoleonic era, private owners kept running the brewery and the inn. In 1846 King Ludwig I bought the monastery. In 1850 he founded Sankt Bonifaz Abbey in Munich, whose monks at Andechs fund the charitable work.
The beer and style of Andechs
According to the sources, Andechs is the largest of the handful of genuine monastery breweries Germany still has, and one of the few still run by Benedictine monks, without a commercial owner. Production is above 100,000 hectoliters a year.
The range revolves around Bavarian styles: Andechser Hell, Spezial Hell, Bergbock Hell, Export Dunkel, Doppelbock Dunkel, Weißbier Hell, Weißbier Dunkel and Weizenbock. They also make an unfiltered radler and the Apfelweisse, plus alcohol-free versions of the hell and the weissbier. Among other things, the brewery invested in an expansion of the yeast and lagering cellar and the brewhouse in 2006, and in a dealcoholization plant.
If you want to see the brewery in person, they offer tours.
Klosterbrauerei Andechs at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal you will find the Andechser Weissbier Dunkel from Klosterbrauerei Andechs, a dark wheat beer of 5% in 50 cl. It is the only Andechs beer we have had so far, and it is highly rated on Untappd. It is not in stock at the moment, so check the brewery page for the latest status.
Pour a weissbier cool, not ice cold, and preferably fresh. A dark weizen shows its best in a tall glass with room for the head. Drink it young rather than old: weizen is not a beer to keep for years.
