An experimental brewery in Budapest
Mad Scientist is based in Budapest and describes itself as one of the most active small-scale, experimental breweries in the city. According to its own website, it has been working non-stop on creative, innovative recipes since 2016. It is an independent Hungarian company run by its founders and owners. By now they export to more than 25 countries.
Their motto on the site is #FOLLOWTHESCIENTIST, and that fits the pace. Every week they come out with one-off new beers, alongside the by now well-known Liquid Cocaine IPA.
How Mad Scientist's beer is put together
The brewery sorts its beers by category. Core consists of beers that are available all year round: recipes that have been refined for a long time and are in balance. Specials are seasonal or one-off beers, where, by their own account, cost efficiency and common sense count for the least.
They also make mead, melomel and braggot under the name Mead Scientist, mainly with Hungarian honey. They also work with alternative fermentation and have a Barrel Project for wood-aged beers. A good part of the work consists of collab beers, made together with other breweries or brewers.
They are strict about freshness. With their Fresh-only beers, the beer has to be blond and hazy, because oxidation breaks down the hop oil. These beers are therefore no longer bottled, but made on keg only, with a shelf life of three months.
Mad Scientist at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we have had eight beers from Mad Scientist, in the styles IPA, weizen, pale ale, sour beer and stout. The strength ranges from 4.2 to 12 percent. Most come in 33 cl, a few in 44 or 50 cl. What is in stock changes with each delivery.
On Untappd, Made In Abyss, Liquid Cocaine, Mango Bay and Popstar, among others, are rated highly.
Drink the hoppy beers as fresh as possible and well chilled, precisely because the brewery itself hammers so much on the danger of oxidation. With the heavier beers you take it easier: let them warm up a little after the fridge and take your time, then flavour and aroma come through better.
