From homebrewing to a brewery in Setúbal
Ophiussa is based in Setúbal, south of Lisbon. According to Left Field Beer, the brewery started in February 2021, but the plans are older. In 2016, homebrewer Daniel began preparing for a brewery of his own. Two years later he met Filipe, also a beer lover.
Filipe travelled to Melbourne, worked there for a mobile canning company and started homebrewing himself. By early 2020 the two were back in Portugal and turned their plans into a brewery. In 2025 Diogo joined as a third partner. They brew at a small production site in Setúbal, with a six hectolitre brewhouse, fermenters and their own canning line.
Smoothie sours, hazy IPAs and heavy stouts
Ophiussa combines classic European styles with the hop-forward innovation from America. The best known are the smoothie sours, the New England IPAs and the barrel aged imperial stouts. Scarlet (5%) is a smoothie sour based on a kettle soured Berliner Weisse with 50% strawberry, with no lactose, marshmallow or vanilla.
Nabia (7%) is a New England IPA with Citra, Nectaron and Riwaka. Oracle (8%) is a West Coast double IPA with Mosaic and Simcoe. On the dark side is Eminence (13%), an imperial stout aged in rum barrels with molasses and three kinds of vanilla. Evocator (10%) is an oak-aged doppelbock from a former bourbon and maple syrup barrel. They made Premonition together with Trilha Cervejaria from Brazil.
Ophiussa at Hoptimaal
At our shop you will find Ophiussa in 44 cl. Most of what we have had from them is sour beer, along with IPAs and a stout. The strength ranges from 5 to 8%. On Untappd, Nysa, Eos, Corvus, Amphora, Aurora and Tethys, among others, are highly rated.
Drink the sours and IPAs as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the fruit and hops keep best. A tulip glass helps bring out the aromas. Pour a stout more slowly and not ice cold, so it can open up.
