How Dois Corvos started in Marvila
Scott Steffens grew up in Seattle and moved to Lisbon, his wife Susana Cascais's hometown, with her. He took his homebrewing gear with him. The local choice then consisted mostly of Sagres and Super Bock. In October 2013, in the middle of the Portuguese crisis, they decided to start a company.
The name comes from the coat of arms of Lisbon, where two ravens protect a ship. In Marvila, then a neighbourhood of abandoned warehouses, they converted an empty industrial building themselves. The first commercial batch came in the summer of 2015, and at the end of that year the taproom opened, the first of its kind in Portugal. Marvila is now informally known as Lisbon's Beer District.
It started with a manual brewing system of 800 litres. In 2017 that became 2,000 litres, and in 2019 the brewery moved within Marvila to its current location, with a centrifuge and a modern canning line. In 2022 production came to about 550,000 litres. The brewery is still fully family-owned.
Styles, barrels and collaborations
Dois Corvos brews in dozens of styles: fresh lagers, hoppy IPAs, dark beers such as stouts and barleywines, and wild ales and sours, often with fruit and spices. Fruit of the Arbutus unedo, the strawberry tree, is one of the local ingredients Scott Steffens mentions.
Barrel ageing has been part of it almost from the start. There are about 350 oak barrels, from wine to rum and whisky, and they have even aged beer in a 120-year-old amphora for wine. In 2022, 48 new beers were released.
The core range includes Creature IPA, Avenida Blonde Ale and Finisterra Imperial Porter, alongside Metropolitan Pale Ale, Matinée Session IPA and Galáxia Milk Stout. On top of that there are seasonal beers, experiments and collaborations with breweries in Portugal and abroad. Ratebeer named Dois Corvos the best brewery in Portugal in 2017.
Dois Corvos at Hoptimaal
At our shop you'll find a changing selection of Dois Corvos beers, all in 33 cl. The range is mostly IPAs, complemented by a porter and a stout, with a strength of 4.5–10%. Highly rated on Untappd are Dois Corvos Miso Schizo, Dois Corvos Weekend, Dois Corvos Creature IPA, Dois Corvos Finisterra and Dois Corvos Matiné Session IPA.
Drink the IPAs as fresh as possible and cold, around 6–8 °C, so the hops stay sharp. Finisterra and other heavier dark beers are best drunk a little warmer and slowly, around 10–12 °C.
