A brewpub in Copenhagen's Meatpacking District
Warpigs Brewpub is in Kødbyen, the Meatpacking District in Vesterbro, Copenhagen. According to its own website, the brewpub was started by Mikkeller. VisitCopenhagen and Good Beer Hunting also name the American brewery Three Floyds as a partner. Mikkeller founder Mikkel Borg Bjergsø describes the idea as a relaxed place with nods to Texas BBQ, a beer hall and metal music, all with an army theme.
Kødbyen is a historic district where almost nothing may be changed in Copenhagen. That is why the meat rail system from the slaughterhouse days still hangs in the brewpub. In 2017, Good Beer Hunting profiled head brewer Kyle Wolak, who worked at Three Floyds for more than five years before moving to Copenhagen in late 2014. Assistant brewer Lan-xin Foo came from Mikkeller's pilot brewing system.
Hoppy American ales with two influences
The focus is on hoppy ales in the American style, exactly what made both partners big. In 2017 the flagship was Lazurite, a clear, fairly bitter IPA. The hops are clearly present, close to unbalanced without really tipping over, as in many Mikkeller beers. The yeast character recalls Three Floyds. The brewing water goes through reverse osmosis and is built up to the profile of Lake Michigan, the water of Three Floyds.
Mikkeller describes the ambition as making the best hoppy beers in Europe, fresh from the serving tanks. The team brews up to eight different beers per week, alternating between favourites and new experiments. On the brewpub's own website, 23 beers brewed in-house are on tap, plus sometimes a guest tap. Guest brewers from all over the world also make their own version of a Warpigs beer. If you want to take your pint with you, you can have a crowler filled.
Warpigs Brewpub at Hoptimaal
With us, it's about IPAs in 44 cl, with a strength of 7–9%. On Untappd, Warpigs Brewpub Fix Your Face, Warpigs Brewpub Hellscape and Warpigs Big Drunk Baby are rated highest. What's in stock changes from time to time, so check the brewery page for the current selection.
Hoppy beers are best drunk as fresh as possible and cool. Keep them in the fridge and pour them into a glass, so the hop aroma is released. Don't drink them straight from the fridge at ice-cold temperature, because at 7–9% the hops and malt come across better once the chill has worn off for a few minutes.
