How Fidens started in Colonie
Steve Parker and Tim Pierce met years ago through a mutual friend. Parker worked as a gym teacher, Pierce as an accountant. Beer was what they shared. Society and Solitude #4 from Hill Farmstead, an imperial IPA with Citra and Galaxy, was an eye-opener for Parker. After that they sought out beers from, among others, Tree House, Trillium, Bissell Brothers and The Alchemist.
With a few dented kegs they built an improvised homebrew system. After two years of brewing at home, the planning for a real brewery began in 2018. The name came from Parker's wife Raquel: Fidens is Latin for bold. The building on Walker Way in Colonie, close to Albany, was the only place they could afford. The brewery opened in late 2019.
A few months later the pandemic hit. Four months after opening, they tore down the taproom and installed a Wild Goose canning line. The setup was a 4-barrel system, meant to supply the taproom weekly. From then on, customers waited in line for the drive-thru, sometimes all night.
Hazy IPAs as a signature
Fidens made its name with IPAs. In 2021, Hop Culture described the beers as creamy in the mouthfeel, lightly sweet, with ripe citrus and tropical fruit and a bitterness that asks for the next sip. Parker himself says IPAs are their brew of choice and that they don't apologise for it.
In those days a release consisted of two or three IPAs, which sold out in about an hour. In 2024, Good Beer Hunting wrote that Fidens was the ninth best-rated brewery in the United States on Untappd. It belongs to the small group of breweries people still stand in line for for hours.
