How Stroom started in Ghent
Stroom Brouwers is at Forelstraat 27 in Ghent. The brewery's entrance is on the Scheldt, and it has a tasting room and a shop. According to Living a Stout Life, the person you find behind the bar there is often one of the owners or a relative of one of them.
Co-founder and head brewer Farrell Styers is an American from Denver. He played in punk bands there, had a quarter-life crisis by his own account, and then lived in Egypt, Washington DC and Kyrgyzstan. In Kyrgyzstan he met the Belgian Carl Uytterhaeghe. Years later Carl asked him what it would look like if they started a brewery together. The reason it became Ghent is that Farrell fell in love with the city.
A Belgian brewery with its own course
Stroom is not an abbey or Trappist brewery and doesn't try to be one. Farrell Styers puts it this way: the influence of the craft beer scene is unmistakable, but they are a thoroughly Belgian brewery.
You can see that in the range. There are Belgian styles, but also a Norwegian farmhouse ale with Sichuan pepper, a coffee IPA, a Vienna lager and a raspberry sour. So you don't get a traditional Belgian line-up, but it isn't a brewery that turns its back on the Belgian beer world either.
Stroom at Hoptimaal
So far we have had a tripel and a saison from Stroom, both in 33 cl. The strength ranges from 5.7 to 7.5%. On Untappd, Stroom Swell and Stroom Loveling are the highest rated of the ones we've had. The range changes, so check the webshop to see what is in stock right now.
Drink these beers fresh and cool, but not ice cold. A saison needs some freshness to show its dry, spicy side. With a 7.5% tripel you can let the glass warm up a little, so the yeast and malt aromas come forward.
