An abbey beer from Egmond aan den Hoef
Sancti Adalberti is the beer brand of Brouwerij Egmond, based in Egmond aan den Hoef in North Holland. The brewery is a stone's throw from the Egmond coast and is linked to the Sint-Adelbertabdij. The name refers to Adalbert, who according to the brewery came to the region from Ireland around 690 to convert the Frisians to Christianity. He settled in a spot in the dunes that came to be called Egmond.
Brouwerij Egmond started out as a gypsy brewer. The first batch of Sancti Adalberti was brewed at Brouwerij de Prael in Amsterdam, because there was no brewing installation in Egmond yet. Later, the plans for a brewery of their own at the abbey were developed further.
The brewery works under an official licence from a Benedictine abbey and says it is the only one in the Netherlands to do so. Part of the proceeds goes to the upkeep of the abbey. Every beer also contains a small amount of spring water from the abbey, from a spring linked to the grave of Saint Adalbert.
Brewed organically, with the abbey as the framework
The beers are organic and carry the Skal quality mark. The range on the website runs from blond, weizen, dubbel and tripel to pastorale, quadrupel, a blonde weizenbock and a barrel-aged Rutte. According to the brewery, the Tripel is unfiltered and unpasteurised and is bottle conditioned, with no added preservatives.
The Abdijbock is listed on Wikipedia as a single bock and on BeerTasting as a dark bock with 6.5% alcohol. Besides the abbey beers, the brewery also has a spring bock and a winter pastorale in its range.
If you want to see more of the brewery itself, you can book a tour. Through the Broederschap Sancti Adalberti you can also become a bondholder. You then receive interest in beer and 10% off in their own webshop.
Brouwerij Sancti Adalberti at Hoptimaal
With us you'll find the Sancti Adalberti Abdijbock, a 6.5% bock in a 33 cl bottle. It is the only beer from this brewery we've had so far, and it is in stock now. On Untappd it is rated highly.
Drink the Abdijbock cool, but not ice cold. Around 8–10 °C the malty side of a bock comes out best. Pour it into a tulip glass or a small goblet and take your time, because it is made for slow drinking. Goes well with stewed meat, roast dishes or a piece of aged cheese.
