From back garden to their own taproom
Folkingebrew started in 2017 in the back garden of a beer shop on the Folkingestraat in Groningen. That's where the name comes from: Folkinge for the starting point, brew for the inspiration from the American craft beer scene. The makers call themselves beer geeks turned brewers and focus on modern, hop-forward styles, because those are the beers they like to drink themselves.
Their motto is never stop dreaming and learning. They keep fine-tuning their recipes, with the ambition to open a brewery of their own one day. That ambition became reality with The Pub, their taproom at Boterdiep 75 in Groningen. According to the brewery itself, it is the heart of what they do. There you'll find 16 rotating taps with their own releases, small-batch exclusives and guest beers from breweries they admire, plus a kitchen.
Hoppy, modern and often strong
On Untappd, Folkingebrew is registered as a nano brewery, with 136 beers to date. The focus is on New England IPAs in every weight class. Submersion is an 8.5% DIPA with Citra, BRU-1, Vic Secret and El Dorado. Chapter X, the tenth release, was their first New England TIPA. It is 9.5% ABV and made with Golden Promise and oats for a soft body.
Out of Space goes a step further: a 10% TIPA with Citra, Mosaic, Galaxy and Sabro, among others. The same approach keeps coming back across the list: plenty of hops, oats in the mash and a yeast strain that gives fruity, juicy results. They also make sour beers, such as the Sour Sequence series.
Folkingebrew at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we have had eight beers from Folkingebrew, all in 44 cl. Mostly IPAs, along with sour beers, a stout and a lager. The strength ranges from 5 to 12%. On Untappd, Singularity #01, It's About Time, Smoothie Sequence #6, Shore Lines, Core and After Hours, among others, are rated highly. Nothing is in stock right now, but the range changes, so feel free to check back.
Drink hoppy beers as fresh as possible and well chilled, at around 6–8 °C. The aromas are at their sharpest then. With the stronger beers, such as a stout or a triple IPA of 9% or more, you can take it slower: let the glass stand for a few minutes and you'll taste more of the depth.
