A brewery in Katendrecht
Kaapse Brouwers is in Katendrecht, a district of Rotterdam with a rough past. In the early twentieth century Chinese migrants settled here, giving Rotterdam its own Chinatown. Later the district grew into one of the biggest red-light districts in Europe. Today the area has changed a lot, and together with the Fenix Food Factory the brewery attracts many visitors, especially at the weekend.
The Fenix Food Factory is in a former warehouse. Tsjomme Zijlstra, a former philosophy student, opened it together with other Rotterdam entrepreneurs. In London he had caught the craft beer bug at The Rake.
Kaapse Brouwers opened in 2014 with a small installation for experiments and smaller batches of barrel-fermented beer. The main range was brewed at De Molen in Bodegraven, which is also a co-owner.
Independent since 2020
In 2020 Kaapse Brouwers bought out the majority shareholders and the brewery became independent again. They moved to another location in the neighbourhood, got a full-scale brewing installation and opened a new bar in the Fenix Food Factory: Kaapse Kaap.
There are more than twenty taps there. You can taste their own beers, but also beers from other good Dutch and European breweries. There are also the taprooms Kaapse Maria and Kaapse Will'ns.
Their starting point is craft beer with character, brewed in Rotterdam. In our range, that runs from blond to IPA and bock.
Kaapse Brouwers at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal you'll find three beers from Kaapse Brouwers: a blond, an IPA and a bock, all in 33 cl. The strength runs from 4.5 to 6.5%. On Untappd, Kaapse Karel, Kaapse Brouwers Kaapse Bok and Kaapse Louise are rated highest.
Drink the blond and the IPA fresh and well chilled, so the hops and the fresh character come through. The bock can be a bit less cold and taken more slowly, so you taste more of the malt.
